Matthew Pritchard is a Welsh former pro-skater who achieved worldwide fame on the MTV show Dirty Sanchez. He is now an ultra-athlete and a passionate vegan cook.
Discovering fitness turned Matt’s life around. Since 2011 Matt has run half and full marathons, single, double and triple Ironman distance events along with many other self-set challenges.
In 2015 he became vegan after discovering that many ultra-athletes choose a plant-based diet for health reasons. Veganism re-ignited his passion for cooking (he trained at catering college) and saw him start his own YouTube cooking show “Pritchard’s Proper Vegan Cooking”. In 2019 he became the presenter of the BBC’s first vegan cookery show, Dirty Vegan. His first cookery book of the same tiles was published to accompany the series.
About Kenya Tri-Adventure
The Kenya Tri AdventureTM expedition is a jam-packed adventure challenge – we cover more than 200km, across 3 disciplines in just 7 days! The expedition consists of five days of trekking Mt Kenya (4985m), two days of scenic mountain biking through game reserves and a half day of exhilarating rafting on the Tana River. We also incorporate two wildlife safaris (one evening and one early morning drive) and a night of camping inside a game reserve!
Each day on the route offers a new challenge with something different to enjoy as you move through the picturesque Kenyan countryside. Kenya is a country of tremendous diversity; landscapes vary from glaciated mountains with snow-capped peaks, to dense forest and flat desert plains.
Along this journey you will learn about Kenyan culture by chatting with our local guides. Kenyans say that; ‘You will arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend’! Kenya is famous as a destination for being home to Africa’s “Big Five” (Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo which we have plenty of opportunity to see in their natural habitat). What many people don’t realise is that Kenya also offers some of the best adventure sport in the world which you will get to sample throughout your stay.
The five-day hike takes us to the summit of Mount Kenya (4985m). Known as Kere Nyaga – Mountain of Brightness, an ancient dormant volcano and Africa’s second highest mountain. Long overshadowed by Tanzania’s Mt. Kilimanjaro, trekkers are starting to take notice of this beautiful glacial peak. The 66km route takes us through a variety of habitats such as dense bamboo and rainforests which are rich in wildlife including elephant, buffalo and monkeys. At the higher elevations we may be lucky enough to spot the rock hyrax, the nearest living relative of the elephant.
The two-day cycle section covers a distance of 106km through a very scenic route in the Kenyan countryside. The terrain is varied with many fun downhill sections as well as some tougher climbs. For the most part we will be riding on dirt roads with very little traffic. Between the two days of biking we camp in a game reserve and go on evening and morning wildlife safaris. The park is stocked with lion, rhino, elephant, hippo, leopard, giraffe and a whole host of other game. The highlight of this experience is going to sleep listening to some of Africa’s biggest game outside your tent!
The Tana River stretches for 1000km and is the longest river in Kenya. It is a drop pool river so makes for an exciting day of white-water rafting. Experienced guides will provide you with the paddle skills you will need to safely get through the many rapids along a 16km stretch including one called ‘Can of Worms’ due to its four 90-degree bends in quick succession. The main river is surrounded by stretches of thick forest with fig and palm trees. These forests are filled with interesting birdlife and often shelter buffalo, elephant, hippo and crocodile as well as a host of smaller, shyer antelope and primates.

There are a number of added extras Matt is offering on his adventure. They are all optional, but we would love you to partake in them all.
Training Weekend: Matt will be hosting a pre-departure training weekend in Snowdonia closer to departure. You will also meet an expedition leader, expedition doctor and your fellow adventurers! On the training weekend an experienced expedition leader will be giving a full expedition brief, leading two training hikes and offering expert advice on all aspects of the expedition including training, equipment, weather etc. You will need to register for the event once you have booked your place via the Earth’s Edge booking portal. Training weekends are included within the price of the trip, food and accommodation required for the training events are not included.
Kenya Tri-Adventure Training Programme: 3 months prior to departure Matt will send everyone a 12-week training program designed to physically prepare you for the challenge ahead.
The Dirty Vegan: Matt would like to send everyone in the group a signed copy of his cookery book “The Dirty Vegan”. Matt will also cook a Vegan BBQ feast on the last night of the expedition. Only vegetarian food will be served while on the expedition. Pritchard is going to complete the expedition on an entirely vegan diet. You are welcome to do the same if you wish. When completing your medical declaration form on your Earth’s Edge account please declare any dietary requests.
Team Facebook Group: Matt would like to invite you to a private group where you can meet each other, share pictures, share progress and get excited about this trip of a lifetime. Members of the Earth’s Edge team will also be in the group to help us with anything that we need!
School Visit: We will organise a visit to a local school on the last day of the trip. We would ask that you collect appropriate school supplies in advance of the trip and that you bring these supplies with you to be donated to the school.
