People do not decide to become extraordinary. They decide to accomplish extraordinary things. Edmund Hilary

At Earth’s Edge we understand that a school education is about more than exams. While classroom-based education traditionally focuses on academic achievement, the Evolve Programme prioritises continual development through experiential and reflective learning. Combining these two styles gives students a holistic education that will help them grow into assertive adults, ultimately leading to a successful career and a fulfilling life.

The Evolve Programme is designed to challenge students with real situations and real consequences; they will constantly evaluate and learn from their own behaviour and the actions of those around them. This process begins right from the launch as we encourage students to self-fund, allowing them to take ownership of their expedition and truly understand its worth.

Our focus on experiential learning allows for the development and retention of critical life skills including self-awareness, empathy, emotional intelligence, teamwork, initiative, problem-solving and communication. We ensure that these skills are both relevant and sustainable; the knowledge developed on our expeditions will last a lifetime.

Students will come away with a new perspective on what is important in life, a greater sense of self-worth, and a powerful addition to any CV or university application.

How it works

Stage 1: Expedition development
We come in to your school to discuss what type of expedition will best suit your school and your students, then we go away and create an itinerary specially tailored for you.

Stage 2: Launch
Once an itinerary has been finalised, we will visit your school to present the proposed expedition to parents, students and staff. An outline itinerary, package costs and inclusions, details of how to sign up, closing date and a Q&A session will be included.

Stage 3: Training
Once you have selected your student group we deliver three days of training in the lead up to the expedition. This training will prepare the students for the physical challenge of the trek as well as the personal development tasks they will be completing. We will provide advice and support to help students self-fund their expedition.

Stage 4: Pre-expedition brief
One month before departure we visit the school to give a full presentation about the expedition to the students, their parents and the teachers involved.

Stage 5: The Expedition
The time has arrived. We deliver a life changing experience for your team. We take your students out of their comfort zones to explore one of the most stunning locations on the planet.
Our groundbreaking Evolve programme is designed to unearth potential; it includes daily leadership, teamwork and problem-solving tasks essential to the team’s progress, and reflective learning sessions to promote continual self-assessment and dynamic learning.
Finishing the expedition with a community project will give the team the chance to really engage in a different culture, experience another way of life and give back to disadvantaged local people.

Stage 6: Follow Up
We come back in to your school three months after the trip and meet the team for a debrief. This evaluation will be followed by a slideshow presentation delivered by the students to the rest of the school and their parents.

“I have been leading school expeditions for over 10 years now, and have brought more than 150 students to various parts of the world. Every student that has come back from their expedition has changed. The expedition takes students out of their comfort zone and puts them into a situation where they need to take more control, challenge themselves and learn from their mistakes. As a teacher I would recommend an expedition to any student, and to every school.” Gavin Maguire, St. Conleths College, Dublin.

“I found dealing with Earth’s Edge a very positive experience in every regard. Their professionalism shone through in every aspect of the trip. The organisation was impeccable and the atmosphere on the trip was amazing and that was totally attributable to James and his team” Elanor Troy, St Patricks College Cork.
